Supreme Court: 2 out of 3 ain't good.

07-01-08

Let's hear it for the Supreme Court....

In the last two weeks of their 2007-2008 session, the U.S.Supreme Court was able to hand down rulings that pleased both the left and the right. AMAZING!!!

First, the Supremes in a 5-4 vote, gave terror suspects being held at Guantanamo Bay the right to petition the courts for their release citing their right to challenge their detention through writs of habeas corpus. As a result, terrorists now have the same rights as gang bangers, hate groups, drug dealers and child molesters. Forget the fact that most of the terrorist held at "Gitmo" were captured in combat in Afghanistan. Since they were not members of an organized national military, the cannot be held as Prisoners of War (POWs)  for the duration of hostilities or subject to  protection under the Geneva Conventions. Lawyers for terror suspects can now demand that classified material in the hands of the government be turned over (and possibly compromise counter-terror operations) or demand that charges be dropped and their clients freed. The questions on my mind are these: How do we maintain our peacetime Constitutional liberties in time of war? How can we afford to maintain our own national security while at the same time be forced to protect the human rights of our enemies? Should we protect the rights of terrorists to access our criminal court system at the risk of more terror attacks? Should we risk another 9/11 in exchange by allowing a terror suspect to exercise the right to remain silent?

Second, in another 5-4 decision, perople convicted of raping children can no longer face the death penalty. Citing the Constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment, the justices overturned the death sentences of two Louisiana  "men" in separate cases.  Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion that "The death penalty is not a proportional punishment for the rape of a child." Kennedy also acknowledged that the ruling had to accept coming to terms with "the years of long anguish that must be endured by the victim of child rape."  With all do respect to Justice Kennedy and the other four "FELLOW TRAVELLERS" who ruled against executing child rapists....
YOU ARE FULL OF IT!! You want to do something to ease the pain and anguish these children will have to face the rest of their lives? Then start the process by allowing the executions their attackers so richly deserve.  I hope you can live with this ruling, we have to.

Third, and the only one they got right, the Supremes finally settled the issue of the right to keep and bear arms. The court threw out Wasington, DC's 32-year old ban on handguns, ruling the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protects the individual's right to own firearms and does not require a person to be part of a law-enforcement agency or a member of the military to exercise that right. The banned handguns in 1976 restricting ownership to current and retired police officers. Rifles and shotguns could be owned but were required to be stored disassembled or secured with a trigger lock, thus useless if needed for home defense. Anti-gun advocates have long argued the Second Amendment meant that the states had the right to arm their militias (Police and National Guard) and that private citizens had no such rights, and that restricting private gun ownership is essential to fighting violent crime. The National Rifle Association (The NRA) and other gun-ownership rights groups will now move to strike down the handgun bans in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs of Morton Grove, Oak Park and Winnetka citing this ruling. It's about time.

With any luck, two of the three sitting justices will step aside and (Hopefully) President McCain will be able to seat judges who will put the rights of law-abiding citizens and our national security ahead of politics.

GO WINGS!!!

06-24-08

I have been remiss of late. Remiss in my coverage of the Presidential campaign and more importantly, remiss in my giving propers to the 2008 Stanley Cup Champions...The Detroit Red Wings. They took Pro Hockey's most coveted prize by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4 games to 2 nearly a month ago and I've been celebrating since. This was the Wings first Stanley Cup win since their 2002 when the won not only the cup, but swept the Winter Olympics. Players from the wings played on all three teams (Canada, USA and Russia). This was their first cup win since the retirement of Steve Yzerman, Detroit's longest serving Captain who holds three Stanley Cup rings and a Gold medal from 2002 for Canada. Congrats.....GO WINGS!!!

In other news...

06-24-08

At this point, I'd like to get off the campaign trail for a while and address other issues of the day. We know it will be John McCain and Barack Obama for the White House. There will be more than enough to comment on later so Enough Said about them for now.

 Here's one for the books.....

By Jason SzepThu Jun 19, 6:27 PM ET  from Reuters.

A Massachusetts city is investigating an apparent teenage "pregnancy pact" that has at least 17 high-school girls expecting babies, four times more than last year, including many aged 16 or younger.

A high school health clinic in the city of Gloucester became suspicious after seeing a surge in girls seeking pregnancy tests. Local officials said on Thursday nearly half of those who became pregnant appear to have entered into a pact to have their babies together over the year.

"Some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," Gloucester High School principal Joseph Sullivan told Time magazine, which broke news of the pact on its Web site.

Sullivan was not immediately available to comment. But local officials said at least some of the men involved in the pregnancies were in their mid-20s, including one man who appeared to be homeless. Others were boys in the school.

Carolyn Kirk, mayor of the port city 30 miles northeast of Boston, said authorities are looking at whether to pursue statutory rape charges. "We're at the very early stages of wrestling with the complexities of this problem," she said.

"But we also have to think about the boys. Some of these boys could have their lives changed. They could be in serious, serious trouble even if it was consensual because of their age -- not from what the city could do but from what the girls' families could do," she told Reuters.

Under Massachusetts law, it is a crime to have sex with anyone under the age of 16.

NATIONAL TREND

"At the very least these men should be held responsible for financial support, if not put in jail for statutory rape as the mayor has suggested," Greg Verga, chairman of the Gloucester School Committee, told Reuters in a telephone interview.

Nationwide, teen pregnancies are showing signs of rising after steadily declining from 1991 to 2005. This trend was highlighted on Thursday when Britney Spears' 17-year-old sister Jamie Lynn, star of Nickelodeon's popular TV show "Zoey 101," gave birth to a baby girl, according to People magazine.

"The data seem to be indicating that the declines that we had seen through the 1990s are coming to a close," said David Landry, a researcher at the Guttmacher Institute, a New York-based nonprofit group focusing on reproductive issues.

Birth rates for teenagers aged 15 to 17 rose by 3 percent in 2006, the first increase since 1991, according to preliminary data released in December by the National Center for Health Statistics.

Landry cautioned against attributing the trend to Hollywood following the recent hit movie "Juno," in which a teenager gets pregnant and decides to have the baby, and "Knocked Up," a comedy about a one-night stand.

"The trend emerged before those movies," he said.

In Gloucester, the 1,200-student school administered 150 pregnancy tests to students in the past academic year. The school forbids the distribution of condoms and other contraception without parental consent -- a rule that prompted the school's doctor and nurse to resign in protest in May.

"But even if we had contraceptives, that pact shows that if they wanted to get pregnant, they will get pregnant. Whether we distribute contraceptives is irrelevant," said Verga.

COMMENT:  Could somebody please tell me where the parents of these girls were when all this happened?  What about the fathers of these children? Will they be held accountable for their actions? Can anybody say "Statutory Rape?" Whatever happened to the concepts of stigma, consequence and shame?
I'm banging my head against a wall over this.  All I can say is  They had their one night of fun. Now it's nine months of Hell and the rest of their lives paying for it (along with their babies and their own families).

To say that  Anjali Datta put her nose to the proverbial grindstone would be an understatement. She studied, took high school courses while she was still in middle school and racked up a 5.898 Grade Point Average, the highest in her graduating class. Normally that would make her class valedictorian at Grapevine, TX High School and entitle her to a one-year scholarship. Not this time. Under the school district policy : "The valedictorian shall be the eligible student with the highest weighted grade-point average for four years of high school."
Miss Datta did it in three.  The policy was established to protect longtime students from having their class ranking undermined by students who transfer in who are close to graduation. School officials decided to grant her the special status of "Valedictorian-Three Year" while Tyler Scott Franklin, who held a 5.64 GPA was awarded "Valedictorian-Four Year."

There is a happy ending however. Datta was awarded a  four-year scholarship to the University of Texas, an award more valuable than the valedictory scholarship.  She also recieved scholarship offers from Southern Methodist, Rice University and the University of Texas at Dallas. On top of that, Datta was awarded a $3,000 scholarship by the Texas Education agency. You Go, Girl.

COMMENT: I wonder how many scholarships those girls in Gloucester will get. Hmmm?

Don Imus: Open Mouth...Insert Foot: Part Two

I said it before, and I'll say it again. Don Imus is an IDIOT! First he makes a racist and sexist crack about a women's basketball team, now he steps into it over a pro football player. During an on-air exchange between himself and sportcaster Warner Wolf regarding the arrest of Dallas Cowboys Cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones, Imus asked "What color is he?" When Wolf naswered that Jones was African-American, Imus responded: "There you go. Now we know." Imus then went on to defend his remarks, saying that Jones was being picked on by the police because he was African-American. Jones has had a number of run-ins with the law, including six arrests dating back to when he was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2005. Jones has been under suspension from the NFL since a shooting in Las Vegas and is lobbying the league for reinstatement. As for Imus, he better hope to God this blows over or this time he will be burnt toast. Stay Tuned.

Oil: It's time to act.

05-28-08

As of this posting, the average cost of regular gas in the metropolitan Detroit area stands at $4.15 per gallon. We cannot afford to see gas prices go any higher and it is time for some action from our leaders in Washington. I have a couple of ideas that might work, if Congress can muster some measure of backbone.

1) Issue an ultimatum to OPEC and state in no uncertain terms. That unless oil production is increased to full capacity, the U.S. will withdraw all military assets from the middle east. Since the first Gulf War, we have been their military protectors. We liberated Kuwait and have kept the Kings and Emirs on their thrones. If they refuse our demands, they can wave goodbye to our carriers, planes tanks and troops and prerpare to be overthrown by Hezbollah, Al Queda or the Ba'athists. Putting it bluntly, OPEC owes us and it is time to collect. AntiWar protesters already want us out of Iraq, we might as well just clear out completely and focus our protective efforts on Israel, the only real friends we have in the region.

2) Impose price controls on gas and pass a windfall profits tax on oil companies. Price controls should have been enacted after 9/11 so as to immunize our economy from the effects of war, such as profiteering. The Bush administration would have  been justified in taking those steps. In return for agreeing to these measures, Congress should ease restrictions on oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWAR) and expand off-shore oil exploration off our continental shelves. We need to face reality. 30 years of opposition to drilling in our own waters by environmentalist groups like "Greenpeace" and "Earth Share" have all but crippled our economy and have compromised our national security. We cannot afford to put the fate of the Snail Darter ahead of our needs for economic security. Show us some guts, Washington...It IS an election year.

Note: Has anyone ever heard of "Greenpeace" having one of it's ships sail into the Persian Gulf to  protest against oil drilling there? I wonder.

Obama: Open Mouth, Insert Foot

05-27-08

Here we go again...

First, Hillary Clinton claimed she faced sniper fire during a visit to U.S. troops in Bosnia. Now Barack Obama has some explaining to do of his own. At a Memorial Day campaign stop in New Mexico, Obama spoke of his uncle who fought in World War II and how he was a member of the forces that liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp. He said his uncle spent months hiding in his attic when he came home and that veterans coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan should be given the best care possible. The problems with his speech  are:
1) It was the Soviet Red Army (Russia) that liberated Auschwitz, not U.S. Forces.
2) Obama's mother was an only child and his father had left the family at a young age, so the "uncle" could not be related to his father.

Later on, an Obama spokesman  said Obama had a great uncle on his mother's side who served with an Army unit that had liberated a Nazi death camp near Buchenwald in 1945.

Senator Obama, learn to get your facts straight before you make a bigger fool of yourself than you and Hillary Clinton already have. The name of the game is credibility and neither of you seems to grasp that concept, that and honesty.

Campaign 08': Down to the wire.

05-27-08

 Well, folks...

Unless she can pull off a miracle on June 1st, Hillary Clinton's run for the White House (and perhaps her future in politics) will be history.Puerto Rico will hold it's Presidential Primary on June 1st with 55 delegates at stake. Barack Obama is 49 delegates short and a total blowout would clinch the nomination then and there. However, Puerto Rico is "Clinton Country" Both Hillary and former President Bill Clinton have a long history with both island residents as well as the nearly 1 million Puerto Ricans who live in New York State. That could work in her favor. On the other hand, Puerto Rico is not a state and it's residents (U.S. Citizens by birth) cannot vote in the general election. However, Democratic party rules grant their delegates full voting status. During a campaign stop in San Juan, Clinton told a crowd of supporters Puerto Ricans deserve a greater say in the U.S. Government. That could be construed as an endorsement for Statehood, a major bone of contention since residents have been historically split on the issue between statehood and ouright independence from the U.S. I've never heard how Obama stands on this issue. But then again, we don't know how he stands on many issues. We'll know soon enough.

____

I have just one question for those conservative commentators and pundits who think that because John McCain does not measure upto their standards, they should boycott the election and let either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama win the Presidency...ARE YOU NUTS?!!! According to their twisted logic, it would be better if America suffered for four years under a liberal administration and cause the GOP to return to it's more conservative roots and support a "True Conservative" in 2012. To the Billy Cunninghams and James Dobsons who would cut off our noses to spite our faces, I say this. We cannot afford even one day of a liberal  administration. High taxes, a weakened national defense posture, appointing activist judges who make law from the bench or overrule the will of the voters and econimic collapse are not worth the price of waiting four years to find the "Perfect" candidate. All I can say is hold your nose and vote Republican. The alternative is too grim to ponder.

____

Speaking of activist judges...

Let's hear it for the California Supreme Court. In a 4-3 ruling, the Golden State's high court overturned a 2000 vote to ban same-sex marriage. Under Proposition 22, marriage was defined as between a man and woman. Californa state law provides for domestic peartnerships is areas of insurance benefits and other rights granted to spouses. However, Chief Justice Ron George wrote in the deciding opinion that domestic partnerships were not a good enough substitute for marriage. My beef is not with gay rights. My beef is with judges who exercise a veto power over the will of the people. This is not the first time the courts in California have told voters they don't count.
In November of 1994, voters approved Proposition 187  (The "Save our State" Initiative) to cut off social services, health care and public educational benefits to illegal aliens. Almost immediately the outcome was challenged in the courts by immigration rights activists. By 1998, after years of court challenges, Proposition 187 was killed in the courts.

In 1996, Voters supported Proposition 209 (The California Civil Rights Initiative) to end affirmative action in state institutions such as civil service and college admissions. In spite of a 54% majority, civil rights groups sued to prevent it's implementation. However a final ruling from none other than the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals (the most liberal court in the Federal system) upheld the voter's will and 209 was carried out. In 2006 Michigan voters approved a similar initiative with the same kind of challenges following suit. Judges are not supposed to legislate from the bench or challenge the will of the electorate. Activist judges like those the Democrats would appoint to the Federal Bench (not to mention the Supreme Court) are a threat to democracy as it was meant to be.

Campaign 08': Hillary's last stand?

05-20-08

Well, Folks...

It looks like Barack Obama may be the Democratic nominee for President by week's end. He is a sure thing in the Oregon while Hillary Clinton is a slam dunk in Kentucky. The Clintons have a good  track record in the Bluegrass state. Bill Clinton took Kentucky and Oregon in both 1992 and 1996 but Oregon is expected to go further left and support Obama. In that case, Hillary should pull the plug on her bid before Memorial Day and that will be all for her. Not only will her run for the White House be over, so too will her future political ambitions. She may choose not to run for re-election to the U.S.Senate in 2010 and that will end the Clinton "Dynasty"....Maybe.

In a recent Rasmussen poll, nearly 30 % of those surveyed said they would support Hillary Clinton in an independent run for President if the Democrats choose Barack Obama as their nominee. Such a move would all but guarantee Republican nominee John McCain's election in that it would split the liberal vote along both racial and gender lines and deny both Clinton and Obama a clear majority in November (Can you say "Spoiler?). Clinton could use such a threat to her advantage in her efforts to seat the delegates from Michigan and Florida. With their currently prohibited votes, Clinton could still make it a floor fight at the national convention in August. Will she blackmail Democrat boss Howard Dean and the party rules committee into giving in to her? Will Hillary pull a "Nader" and run on her own and split the vote? Will she destroy the Democratic party if she doesn't get her way?....Stay Tuned.

Note: Barack Obama picked up another endoser, a real cross-burner at that. Senator Robert C. Byrd (D-WVA), America's longest-serving Senator and "Former" leader in the Ku Klux Klan has thrown in with Obama. Byrd has repeadedly apologized for his membership in the Klan, which he joined in the 1940s "To Fight Communism."  Byrd also opposed integrating the military and fought against civil rights legislation including a filibuster of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  Let's see now... A hate-monging minister (Jeremiah Wright), a pair of 60s radicals who planted bombs at the Capitol, the Pentagon and NYPD headquarters (Willaim Ayers and wife Bernadette Dorn) and now a "former" leader in the KKK.  I can't wait for Hugo Chavez, Raul Castro and Osama Bin Laden to pledge their support. Oops, I forgot about Hamas leader Ahmed Yousef, Libya's  Moammar Khadafy (a real supporter of freedom) and Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Say Good Night, Hillary. GAME OVER!!

05-07-08

The writing is on the wall....

Two weeks ago, Barack Obama was handed his head in the Pennsylvania Primary. Now, He's on top of the world after winning North Carolina. Even his 2-point defeat at the hands of Hillary Clinton could be construed as a victory. For now it is quite clear, Hillary Clinton's days as a viable Presidential candidate are numbered (if not already over). In order for her to rebound and have any chance of leapfrogging Obama for the Democratic nomination, she needs to get the "Superdelegates" on her side and somehow get the delegates from Michigan and Florida (who were stripped of their convention seats for violating party rules and held their primaries before February 2nd) seated. The "Superdelegates" (high-profile party members including past and current elected officials) have all but stated they will not go against the popular vote and the pledged delegates which now favors Obama for the most part (they are not that stupid). Otherwise, she is finished. Even long-time Clinton supporters such as George McGovern (Whom the Clintons worked for on his 1972 Campaign) have called for her to quit the race.

Hillary Clinton needs to read the writing on the wall: As much as the Dems want to regain control of the White House, they don't want to be owing to the Clintons for another four to eight years (GOD FORBID...PLEASE!). If that means electing a freshman senator who has spent more time running for President than doing what voters in Illinois elected him to do, so be it. Her best chance is to wait until 2012 and run again. Obama could screw up big time during the first four years of  a Democratic administration  if he is elected, so could John McCain if the Republicans win. That would put her in the position of the Democrat's redeemer. As for now if she wants to be the cause of a civil war within the Democratic Party, that is her prerogative. My party has already made up it's mind, and so have I.

Campaign 08': Bad times for Barack

05-06-08

It's been a bad couple of weeks for Barack Obama.....Too Bad.

At a private fundraiser in The Soviet Republic of San Francisco, The Illinois Senator commented that economic frustrations in small towns in Pennsylvania led people to cling to God, guns and prejudice. He paid for that crack when he lost to Hillary Clinton in the Keystone State Primary. Senator, you can't badmouth people for their beliefs and then expect them to support you. Then his former Pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright (AKA: the "Millstone") reiterated his comments about America's "Chickens coming home to roost" (That the United States deserved to be attacked on 9/11) and that the HIV/AIDS virus was developed by the U.S. government as a genocide weapon aimed at African-Americans. Then Wright said that if Obama were elected President, he would "Go after him" (that he would confront Obama as President of the United States and head of the government he despises, not as one of his congregation). That forced Obama back into damage control mode, severing all ties with Wright.

Then there is Bill Ayers. During the 1960s, Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground. They were responsible for bombings at the Pentagon, the U.S. Capitol and New York Police Headquarters in a campaign of terror aimed at forcing the U.S. to pull out of Vietnam. What is that word that describes people who do things like this? I know...I know....TERRORISTS!!! Now Ayers is a Professor at the University of Chicago. He makes no apologies for his actions and said on 9/11 that he regrets not setting off more bombs. Obama is an "acquaintance" of Ayers. Obama downplays the relationship, stating they sat on committees together and that their children were closer friends than they were.

A hate-monging minister with delusions of grandeur and a domestic terrorist who should be cooling his heels at "Gitmo" . With friends like these... who needs enemies? Hillary must be laughing her fool head off.

On to Indiana and North Carolina...The dogfight continues.

Clinton/Obama 2008: LIES...LIES AND MORE LIES!!!

04-19-08

Is is me or is the Democratic Party a LIARS CLUB?...

The one thing both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton have in common is a near-pathological bent for lying through their teeth:

1) Hillary Claims she feared for daughter Chelsea's safety  on 9/11 in that she was jogging around the World Trade Center the morning of the attack. In reality. Chelsea was home safe and sound and was watching the attacks on TV.

2) Hillary was under sniper fire in Bosnia during a visit to U.S. Troops in 1996. Video of the visit says otherwise. Question: If the situation was so bad that day why did she bring Chelsea with her?

3) Hillary claims to support the rights of gun owners. She supported the Brady Bill and the Ban on Semi-Automatic firearms (So-Called "Assault Weapons") and is on record she will reinstate that ban if elected.

Those are just a few of her "Misspoken" moments.

Barack Obama seems to have the same problem with the truth as well:

1) Obama Claims he was "conceived" around the time of the civil rights march on Selma, Alabama in 1965. He was born in 1961.

2) Obama claims he was a Constitutional Law Professor at the University of Chicago. He is a "Senior Lecturer" (on leave of absence). He taught Constitutional law but is not a tenured professor.

3) Obama told the Chicago Sun-Times that he estimates he recieved between $50,000 and $60,000 in campaign from indicted "businessman" Tony Rezko. Try $168,000.

These may seem petty lies to some. However, it bespeaks a pattern of deception that needs to be scrutinized more deeply. If they lied about these incidents. What else have they lied about and why should we trust either of them with our safety?

Campaign 08': The Madness Continues...

04-14-08

Are you as tired of this Garbage as I am?...

Back in January, both Michigan and Florida held their Democratic Presidential primaries. Michigan's was on January 15th, Florida's on the 29th.  The Democratic National Committee warned both state committees that they would be stripped of their delegates the the national convention if they held their primaries before February 5th. Both states defied the DNC and as of now will not be represented in Denver this August. Hillary Clinton won both primaries and wants the delegates seated. Current Democratic Barack Obama followed Party instructions and took his name off both state ballots. Obama's supporters were told their votes would not be counted and many simply stayed away from the polls. At stake are 313 delegates to the convention (128 from Michigan, 185 from Florida). With the Democratic race so close, their status is now a serious issue. Clinton wants the delegates she won seated so she can leapfrog Obama's lead perhaps win the nomination, while Obama is demanding the DNC stick to it's guns, keep the delegates out and preserve his lead.

The problem with National Party Chief Howard Dean is this: If the delegates from Michigan and Florida are not seated, the backlash could lead to those states going independent or worse (for the Dems at least), go Republican in November. If they are seated and cast their votes for Clinton, the Obama camp may cry "FOUL!", "FIX!" and, you can bet the farm on this...."RACISM!" This has become a nightmare for the Democrats who swore after the 2000 fiasco to "Count every vote and make every vote count." Efforts to stage "Re-Votes" in both states have failed due to the lack of time to organize such a vote and the DNC's refusal to bankroll the "Re-Votes". The National Committee wants the states to put up the money citing their need to save money for the national campaign for whoever wins the nomination and would rather leave it up to the taxpayers in Michigan and Florida to pick up the tab. As a taxpayer (and Republican), I can tell you I don't want to ante up for any second chance elections for the Democrats. If Clinton or Obama want "Re-Votes," Let them pony up for them. As for this year, I have to agree with Al Sharpton (for once) when he said "Let the rules be the rules." The DNC should hold firm, ban the delegates, go into the convention two states short and take their chances in the general election. As for the state parties in Michigan and Florida, their leadership should be held accountable and shown the door for their arrogance and utter stupidity.
