Two weeks have passed since voters in California approved Proposition 8, which amends the state constitution to state that marriage is defined as an exclusive relationship between one man and one woman. In effect prohibiting same-sex marriage. The backlash from gay rights activists has risen to a near riot level of anger. Boycotts have been staged against business owners and threats made against those found supporting Prop 8. Protesters took to the streets and have vowed to overturn the results in the courts. Is this what we have to look forward to from now on? Will every election and ballot initiative face this kind of backlash from those on the losing side? Will the outcome of every vote face a judges veto? That is NOT Democracy. The will of the people must be respected regardless of the results. I voted for John McCain, but I (along with the rest of America's conservatives) must live with the reality that Barack Obama won the Presidency. We as Republicans do not take to the streets or go crying to the courts to strike down elections we do not win. If those who oppose Prop 8 want to overturn it legally, do it the right way. Get a repeal on the ballot for the next election and let the people of California decide. That is Democracy.
