Campaign 08': The Madness Continues...

04-14-08

Are you as tired of this Garbage as I am?...

Back in January, both Michigan and Florida held their Democratic Presidential primaries. Michigan's was on January 15th, Florida's on the 29th.  The Democratic National Committee warned both state committees that they would be stripped of their delegates the the national convention if they held their primaries before February 5th. Both states defied the DNC and as of now will not be represented in Denver this August. Hillary Clinton won both primaries and wants the delegates seated. Current Democratic Barack Obama followed Party instructions and took his name off both state ballots. Obama's supporters were told their votes would not be counted and many simply stayed away from the polls. At stake are 313 delegates to the convention (128 from Michigan, 185 from Florida). With the Democratic race so close, their status is now a serious issue. Clinton wants the delegates she won seated so she can leapfrog Obama's lead perhaps win the nomination, while Obama is demanding the DNC stick to it's guns, keep the delegates out and preserve his lead.

The problem with National Party Chief Howard Dean is this: If the delegates from Michigan and Florida are not seated, the backlash could lead to those states going independent or worse (for the Dems at least), go Republican in November. If they are seated and cast their votes for Clinton, the Obama camp may cry "FOUL!", "FIX!" and, you can bet the farm on this...."RACISM!" This has become a nightmare for the Democrats who swore after the 2000 fiasco to "Count every vote and make every vote count." Efforts to stage "Re-Votes" in both states have failed due to the lack of time to organize such a vote and the DNC's refusal to bankroll the "Re-Votes". The National Committee wants the states to put up the money citing their need to save money for the national campaign for whoever wins the nomination and would rather leave it up to the taxpayers in Michigan and Florida to pick up the tab. As a taxpayer (and Republican), I can tell you I don't want to ante up for any second chance elections for the Democrats. If Clinton or Obama want "Re-Votes," Let them pony up for them. As for this year, I have to agree with Al Sharpton (for once) when he said "Let the rules be the rules." The DNC should hold firm, ban the delegates, go into the convention two states short and take their chances in the general election. As for the state parties in Michigan and Florida, their leadership should be held accountable and shown the door for their arrogance and utter stupidity.

"Enough Said!"
